Rotating images, simply explained
The rotation and flips are baked into the pixels permanently, so the saved image opens the right way up in every app. Phone photos that carry orientation information are read the way they display, so rotating here fixes them for apps that would otherwise show them sideways. HEIC photos are saved as JPG, because HEIC cannot be written here. Saving as JPG flattens transparency onto white. Every result is re-saved at the quality you set, so saving as JPG or WebP loses a little quality; PNG is saved without losing quality.
