Mute videos online

Remove the sound from videos, right in your browser, without uploading anything. Pick clips and save each as MP4 or WebM with no audio track. Titles and locations stored in a clip are kept in the muted file. The tool is built for short clips: muting happens on your device, so saving in a different format — which re-encodes the picture — can take a long time.

How it works

Muting videos, simply explained

The tool drops the audio track and keeps the picture: no sound is kept, and no silence track is added in its place, so the result simply has no audio track. When the clip is already in the format you pick — an MP4 saved as MP4, or a WebM saved as WebM — the picture is copied untouched, with no loss of quality; any other combination re-encodes the picture at the same quality as a conversion, with odd dimensions rounded down to even numbers, so the muted clip plays everywhere. A rotation tag is preserved when the picture is copied and baked into the pixels when it is re-encoded. Subtitle tracks are not carried over, and chapters are dropped, while the clip's general file information — such as a title or location, where the file has any — is kept. A clip without sound mutes the same way, with no audio track added and no error: the result is just the picture, as before. There is no sound to re-encode, so unlike tools that keep sound, muting never refuses a clip for its sound — stereo and surround clips mute as MP4 or WebM alike. The result is named after the original clip, with -muted added. Everything runs on your device, which keeps your videos private but means speed depends on your device — short clips finish quickly, while long videos can take a very long time, so this tool is best for short clips.
