Compressing video for social, simply explained
The tool re-encodes your video as MP4 (H.264 video with AAC audio), starting at your video’s resolution, up to 1920 wide, at the bitrate your target size implies, and measures the real output after every encode: if it does not fit, it steps the bitrate and then the resolution down and tries again, up to a floor of 360 px wide at 400 kbit/s. It never claims a fit it did not measure, and it never goes below that floor to force one — if even the floor does not fit, it says so plainly. Only the first audio track is kept, subtitles are not carried over, and HDR videos are converted to standard colour. No watermark, branding or attribution is added to the video, its metadata or its filename. Everything runs on your device, which keeps your video private but means speed depends on your device.
