How it works

Compressing images, simply explained

The tool decodes each image and saves it again at the quality you choose: lower quality makes a smaller file, higher quality keeps more detail. Keeping the original format saves a JPG as a JPG and a WebP as a WebP; HEIC photos are saved as JPG, because HEIC cannot be written here. PNG is lossless, so keeping the format on a PNG re-saves it without losing quality — and rarely makes it smaller; converting a PNG to JPG or WebP usually shrinks it far more. Saving as JPG flattens transparency onto white. Every result is saved again at the quality you set, so saving as JPG or WebP loses a little quality even when the size stays the same; PNG saves without losing quality. Every result shows its real before-and-after sizes, even when a re-encoded file comes out larger.
